Зі звичайними словами

1. З конкретними, відомими нам об'єктами, які можна й не можна порахувати (причому як в однині, так і в множині): The cats are sitting in the grass over there.
2. За потреби повторно згадати якийсь об'єкт: I got a degu. The rodent was not easy to take care of.
3. Для позначення цілих груп (тварин, національностей, місцевих або державних служб тощо): the Catholics, the Kazakhs, the police, the Liberals.
4. Для позначення різних частин будинку: Our designer designed the nursery to look like an underwater world.
5. Зі складовими міської інфраструктури: We decided to all go to the rink together.
6. Для опису розташування чогось: On the right is the house where I grew up.
7. З часами доби: In the evening I just eat a vegetable salad.
8. У разі використання найвищого ступеня: They are the sweetest breed of dog I've ever met.
9. Для зазначення дати, порядкового номера: The doctors have rescheduled the examination for the 20th of March. The second important issue is security.

13. Перед словами only, first, last, same (у ролі прикметників): She has the same jacket as me.

Власні назви

1. З назвами родин: TheRothschilds have never made the Forbes top lists.
2. Перед титулами (без зв'язку з іменами): TheKing of the Franks assumed the title in 768. ThePope is going to visit Germany. Але (у разі додавання імені): King William I the Conqueror could not read.
3. З власними назвами, що складаються з двох слів:The Big Chill (назва пабу) often features big name musicians.
