Казалось бы, маленькое слово из всего трех букв — а такая значимая составляющая в английском языке. Этот артикль является неотъемлемой частью грамматики и служит для определения конкретности неких предметов или событий. Используется он для указания на какие-то объекты, чтобы сузить или наоборот расширить контекст сказанного. Поэтому ниже мы подробно разбираем, какие нюансы привносит артикль «?the» в английскую речь и в каких случаях он используется.

С обычными словами

1. С конкретными, известными нам объектами, которые можно и нельзя сосчитать (причем как в единственном, так и в множественном числе): The cats are sitting in the grass over there.
2. При необходимости повторно упомянуть какой-нибудь объект: I got a degu. The rodent was not easy to take care of.
3. Для обозначения целых групп (животных, национальностей, местных или государственных служб и т.д.): the Catholics, the Kazakhs, the police, the Liberals.
4. Для обозначения разных частей дома: Our designer designed the nursery to look like an underwater world.
5. С составляющими городской инфраструктуры: We decided to all go to the rink together.
6. Для описания расположения чего-либо: On the right is the house where I grew up.
7. С временами суток: In the evening I just eat a vegetable salad.
8. При использовании превосходной степени: They are the sweetest breed of dog I've ever met.
9. Для указания даты, порядкового номера: The doctors have rescheduled the examination for the 20th of March. The second important issue is security.
10. С периодами и эпохами в истории, знаковыми событиями, столетиями и десятилетиями: During the Industrial Revolution, technological advances transformed society.The Renaissance brought with it secular culture and humanism. What do you know about the 19th century?
11. Для обозначения пляжа, вокзала, побережья, моря, магазина, библиотеки, сельской местности: The countryside offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. I dream of buying a house on the coast.
12. С валютами: In recent months, the yuan has strengthened significantly in the currency market.
13. Перед словами only, first, last, same (в качестве прилагательных): She has the same jacket as me.

Собственные имена

1. С названиями семейств: TheRothschilds have never made the Forbes top lists.
2. Перед титулами (без связки с именами): TheKing of the Franks assumed the title in 768. ThePope is going to visit Germany. Но (при добавлении имени): King William I the Conqueror could not read.
3. С собственными именами, состоящими из двух слов:The Big Chill (название паба) often features big name musicians.
4. С названиями, части которых связаны предлогом of: Megan attended the University of California, Los Angeles. Но также можно сказать: California State University.
5. Перед географическими объектами: 
   • Mark Twain called the Mississippi a trickster because of its winding and unpredictable course – водные объекты (кроме озер). 
   • The Azores islands are breathtakingly beautiful – группы островов. 
   • The Cordilleras cross the territories of three countries – горные хребты.
   • Scientists have proven that the Gobi is constantly growing – пустыни.
   • It has always been a dream of mine to visit the Czech Republic. The Netherlands is famous for its stunning tulip fields and its intricate canal system. With its rich history and diverse landscapes, the United Kingdom offers visitors a blend of tradition and innovation. Germany, commonly known as the Federal Republic of Germany, boasts a strong economy and a rich cultural heritage – названия объединений, республик, федераций, стран в множественном числе, а также:The Gambia's diverse wildlife is a magnet for nature lovers – исключение.
6. С названиями разных культурных объектов:
   • We stayed at the Ritz Hotel during our trip to London - отели.
   • We saw a Shakespeare play at the Globe Theater - театры, кинотеатры.
   • The Louvre is famous for its extensive art collection, including the Mona Lisa - музеи.
   • The New York Times is a widely respected newspaper - газеты, журналы.
   • The Titanic was a luxurious yet tragic ship - корабли.
   • The United Nations works for global peace and cooperation - организации.
   • We admired stunning art at the National Gallery - галереи.
   • My first thought of New York is the Statue of Liberty - памятники архитектуры.
